Novelista, dramaturgo y ensayista estadounidense. Vidal comenzó a publicar sus escritos luego después de servir en el ejército durante la guerra. Si bien escribió obras de teatro y guiones para televisión y cine, es más conocido por sus novelas irreverentes y hábiles intelectualmente. La obra La ciudad y el pilar (1948) causó sensación por su contenido homoerótico. Myra Breckenridge (1968) fue aclamada por su cáustico y descabellado estilo satírico. Entre sus otras novelas, muchas de ellas de tema histórico y en su mayoría éxitos de ventas, se encuentran Juliano el Apóstata (1964), Washington, D.C. (1967), Burr (1974), 1876 (1976), y Lincoln (1984). También publicó varias colecciones de ensayos y la autobiografía Palimpsest [Palimpsesto] (1996). Conocido por sus análisis políticos izquierdistas e iconoclastas, se presentó en dos oportunidades para ejercer un cargo en el congreso.
